Posts: 1730 | 300mm is a good general length, but it really depends on what use you are going to put it to. Hand held and image stabilisation is useful, but it comes at the expense of IQ. If you are going to use a lens on a tripod, then a non-stabilised lens will give better IQ and sharper prints. I would think that a gyro system which works away from the elements of the lens would give the same IQ as a non-IS lens. In all cases primes will out perform zoom lenses every time. The 'Big Ma' lens is a lens that you either love or hate. There have been many heated discussions on it. I have never used one myself. With you budget, a first class prime lens should be available. You might look at some of the independent importers to make a saving. Anything bought in this country will cost twice as much as the same item purchased outside Europe. A Nikon 300 f4 ED-IF AF-S with built in hood and tripod foot would be about £500 and a 70-300 f4-5.6 would be around £60ish. A 80-200 around £460 and an 80-400 around the £720 mark. There would be postage and VAT to pay on top of this. Second hand, they would be much less.
